Varian mag dan een Amerikaanse onderneming zijn, de gaschromatografen van dit merk komen allemaal uit Middelburg. Het bedrijf doet vrijwel alles in eigen huis.
Hoog in de fabriekshal zakt een glazen buis langzaam weg in een smeltoven. Opgerekt tot een kilometerslang capillair komt hij weer naar buiten. Vervolgens gaat hij nog een paar keer op en neer door de fabriek om te worden gecoat met zes lagen lichtbruin polyimide om de breekbaarheid te verminderen. Na een laatste kwaliteitscontrole wordt het capillair op maat gesneden en opgerold, klaar om de basis te vormen voor een reeks gaschromatografiekolommen.
Scène uit een lagelonenland? Nee, gewoon een industrieterrein aan de rand van Middelburg. Waar industriële productieprocessen tegenwoordig synoniem lijken met uitbesteding, doet GC-producent Varian vrijwel alles in eigen huis. Alleen het metalen frame, dat het opgerolde capillair bij elkaar houdt, wordt er door een toeleverancier omheen gevlochten. Ook voor de rest van de GC-apparaten geldt dat Varian alleen de meest basale onderdelen, zoals de omkasting en de printplaten, extern bestelt.
Alleen zo is het kwaliteitsniveau te garanderen, legt director of operations René de Nijs uit. “Om bijvoorbeeld met onze Factor Four-kolommen een zo laag mogelijke bleed (weglekken van de pakking, red.) te bereiken, moeten we zo weinig mogelijk verontreinigingen in onze materialen hebben. Wij zijn van mening dat we dat niet kunnen uitbesteden naar Singapore of China. Zelfs de polymeren, waarmee we de binnenzijde van de kolommen coaten, produceren we in eigen huis. In een grijs verleden gebruikten we daar producten zoals remolie voor, maar tegenwoordig streven we naar een hoge zuiverheid en thermostabiliteit. Dus hebben we de keuze gemaakt: we doen het zelf.”
CENTER OF EXCELLENCE
De fabriek in Middelburg is in 1968 opgericht onder de naam Chrompack. In het begin maakte zij alleen kolommen. Door de overname van Packard-Becker uit Delft werd het assortiment uitgebreid met complete GC’s. De petrochemische industrie in Nederland en België vormde de belangrijkste doelgroep.
In 1998 nam Varian Chrompack over, en daar werd de vestiging in Middelburg alleen maar beter van. De Nijs legt uit dat Varian werkt met centers of excellence. “Elke vestiging specialiseert zich in een bepaalde analysetechniek en Middelburg is het wereldwijde centrum voor GC-apparaten en consumables geworden.” Inmiddels werken er zo’n 250 mensen.
Die mensen staan niet aan de lopende band. GC’s bouwen is bij Varian ambachtelijk werk. In de catalogus staan maar drie modellen, de 3800, de 3900 en de 4900, plus één type autosampler. Die laatste wordt als bouwpakket aangeleverd door een vijftal toeleveranciers. Van de GC’s wordt ongeveer de helft samengesteld volgens de specificatie van de klant. Voor de andere helft is er keuze uit dermate veel injectoren, detectoren en kolommen dat er eigenlijk geen standaarduitvoering is aan te wijzen.
PROCESOPERATORS
Sinds 1968 is de techniek behoorlijk geëvolueerd. “Toen ze begonnen met GC was het op labniveau”, vertelt sales manager Peter Krabbenborg. “Daar werkten mensen met ervaring die wisten hoe ze een piek moesten interpreteren. Maar fabrieken zien zo’n lab als een kostenpost en dus zie je een trend naar online- of inlinemetingen, rechtstreeks in de processtromen. Een procesoperator heeft alleen niet dezelfde opleiding als een laborant. Dat heeft Chrompack al heel vroeg gezien als gat in de markt.”
Het leidde tot een specialisering in turnkeyoplossingen, bedoeld om één bepaalde applicatie uit te voeren zonder dat de operator erbij hoeft na te denken. “Klantspecifiek werken begint daarbij al in het verkooptraject”, weet Krabbenborgs collega Wim van der Poel. “De klant komt naar de fabriek, vaak met een monster van het te analyseren product, om in discussie te gaan met onze whizzkids. Die maken een stroomschema, met de hardware die ze voor de analyse nodig denken te hebben. Op basis daarvan maken we een offerte.”
Het ultieme turnkeyproduct is de CP-4900 Micro-GC, een online-meetinstrument waar de operator niet eens meer naar hoeft om te kijken. Een lichtgrijze ‘zwarte doos’ die de samenstelling van gasmengsels continu in de gaten houdt. De belangrijkste componenten zijn uitgevoerd als labs op een chip, vervaardigd met micromachining en lithografietechieken. Een groot voordeel is dat de analyses veel sneller verlopen dan in een klassieke GC, omdat het monster een kortere weg aflegt. Een complete analyse kost nog maar een minuut, in plaats van minstens een
kwartier.
Volgens Krabbenborg leiden de hoge energieprijzen tot een stijgende vraag naar deze micro-GC’s. “Je kunt er de calorische waarde van aardgas mee meten, die bepalend is voor de prijs. Ook worden ze gebruikt voor oil well logging. Tijdens het boren naar olie analyseer je de modderstroom uit het boorgat op methaan, ethaan en propaan. Dat is een indicatie voor het bereiken van een olieveld. Er wordt steeds meer geboord, dit jaar verkopen we tweemaal zoveel micro-GC’s voor dit doel als vorig jaar. En de biobrandstofwereld zou ook wel eens een interessante afzetmarkt kunnen worden.”
HOOG OPGELEID
Bij Varian werken heel wat chemici. Voor de ontwerpafdeling neemt het bedrijf graag academisch gevormde analytici aan die eerder in de chemische industrie hebben gewerkt en daardoor de applicaties van de klanten goed kennen. Op de werkvloer zijn het vooral hbo’ers en hlo’ers die de GC’s in elkaar zetten. “En daarnaast hebben we een ontwikkelingsafdeling waar zo’n veertig mensen zich enkel en alleen bezighouden met R&D”, vult De Nijs aan.
Hoog opgeleide mensen dus bij Varian. De Nijs: “Het zit hem vooral in het kennisniveau dat je moet hebben om oplossingen te bedenken voor je klanten. Als je denkt aan lagelonenlanden, denk je aan productieprocessen waarvoor weinig kennis nodig is, of kennis die je makkelijk kunt overdragen. En al wordt vaak gezegd dat gaschromatografen simpele oventjes zijn, wat wij bouwen is een heel ander verhaal.”|
