In veel Westerse landen wordt chloor aan drinkwater toegevoegd om het te ontsmetten. Het chloor reageert met water tot waterstofhypochloriet (HOCl) en zoutzuur (HCl), die op hun beurt micro-organismen omleggen. Maar chloor kan ook met organische stoffen uit het water reageren tot toxische halogeenbevattende stoffen, waaronder negen verschillende halo-acetaten. In Amerika mag de opgetelde concentratie van vijf bepaalde halo-acetaten niet meer zijn dan 0,06 milligram per liter.
Er bestaan verschillende methoden op de concentratie van de halo-acetaten in drinkwater te bepalen, die allen zijn gebaseerd op gaschromatografie. Het grote nadeel is dat er veel extractie- en modificatiestappen inzitten, waardoor de methodes veel tijd kosten.
De beschreven methode is simpeler. De halo-acetaten worden met ionchromatografie gescheiden, waarna ze met nicotinamide reageren onder vorming van een fluorescerend product. Door het meten van de fluorescentie kun je de concentratie bepalen van de negen individuele halo-acetaten. Het doormeten van een monster kost twee uur, bovendien is de methode volledig geautomatiseerd. De detectielimiet ligt tussen de 0,6 en 10,1 microgram per liter.
De onderzoekers testten hun methode uit op drinkwatermonsters. Ook pasten ze een conventionele GC-methode toe. Beide methoden gaven vergelijkbare uitkomsten.
